Mardi Gras in Iraq...

Found this website with lots of military things, but the best part are the pictures.
Click here to see pictures of our troops enjoying the little pleasures they remember from home. God Bless them!

Pearl Harbor remembered...

Posted by Hello
The USS Arizona is no longer in commission, contrary to popular belief. A flag of the United States of America does fly above the sunken battleship. The flag is attached to a severed mainmast of the USS Arizona.

A worthy sentiment for all of us to pray for...

While we honor those who gave their last full
measure of devotion, all of us hope and pray
that the time will come when we will no longer
need to dedicate memorials to men who died in
battle---that we will dedicate memorials to those
who live in peace---to all nations and all men.

The Japanese surrendered on this Battleship on September 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay.
It is interesting to note that the USS Missouri was recommissioned and played a major role in the Gulf War.
It is now drydocked and serves as a museum at Pearl Harbor.

USS Arizona Memorial

The USS Arizona is commemorated by a 184 foot-long memorial structure that spans its mid-portion. No part of the edifice touches the ship.

This is the shrine room of the Arizona Memorial. 1,177 men lost their lives. 75 bodies were recovered, the rest remain entombed in the wreckage.

This ship is not on public display, but if you can get on base you can walk to it. There is a small memorial to the 58 men entombed in the ship. The families want to keep it the way it is and some of the men who were on the ship when it was bombed are cremated when they die and their ashed buried with their shipmates. It was blocking the channel after being bombed so the decision was to clear the channel by pushing the ship over to it's side. It's hard to see in the picture, but there is some kind of ivy and flowers growing out of the middle section of the ship. It's really very pretty and peaceful without all the tourist crowds.

Strafing marks left by Japanese aircraft as they bombed the US planes. The planes were tied down wing tip to wing tip to prevent sabotage. In reality, that decision damaged more of the planes. Posted by Hello

A Balao class fleet submarine, representative of the U.S. submarines used in WWII. The primary weapon of this class of sub is the torpedo. Opened to the public at Pearl Harbor in April, 1981.
"Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ...HOLY COW... what a ride!"
